ISLAMABAD, Dec 24 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Thursday said the democratic government intends to open a new chapter of relationship with Tajikistan and Central Asia by reinvigorating bilateral cooperation in diverse fields.Talking to Colonel General Khayrulloev Sherali, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Prime Minister underlined the need for establishing trade and energy corridors with Central Asia for the development of whole region.
The Prime Minister hoped that feasibility studies being carried out currently to establish a land route between Chitral and Ishkashim in Tajikistan would soon be completed and Tajikistan would be able to seek the required consent of Afghanistan for establishing this important road link through Wakhan strip.
He expressed satisfaction on the signing of Memorandum of Understanding on ‘Military and Military Technical Cooperation’ during Tajik Defence Minister’s current visit which he said will serve to open new vistas of the cooperation between the two countries Armed Forces.
He noted that Pakistan and Tajikistan had earlier signed Air Services Agreement (in October 2009) to facilitate air travel between the two countries. Prime Minister also hoped that with the opening of National Bank of Pakistan’s Branch in Tajikistan, enhancement of bilateral trade and economic ties would be facilitated.
He offered the use of Gwadar Port to Tajikistan for its external trade. The Tajik Defence Minister thanked the Prime Minister for his kind gesture of goodwill for converting the $13 million loan to Tajikistan into grant.
He also conveyed the gratitude of his government for Pakistan’s generous offer of enhanced gratis training slots for Pakistan’s armed forces personnel and for sending Pakistan armed forces trainers to Tajikistan to help his government develop its military institutions.
Colonel General Khayrulloev Sherali stated that besides his very useful meetings with Pakistan’s leadership during his visit, he had the occasions to visit POF Wah and Kamra defence production facilities.
Tajikistan would like to send the trainees to these institutions and will consider procurement of defence equipment from them in the future.
Colonel General Khayrulloev Sherali proposed bilateral cooperation in developing hydro power capacity of his country to enable it to export electricity to Afghanistan as well as to Pakistan. He informed the Prime Minister that his government would fully support Pakistan’s case for the membership of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. APP
