Three new patients of swine flu have been confirmed positive by the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKH) on Thursday with doctors at the hospital saying that all were mild cases.
The AKUH has been testing the blood samples of patients in its laboratory and has been sharing the information with the health ministry since June 2009. Dr Bushra Jamil, of the Infection Control Committee said that after a lot of countries faced a severe outbreak of swine flu, the hospital thought of testing people fearing the same and “our doubts were confirmed as, so far, we have tested and confirmed some 31 patients, including the new ones and have also sent the samples to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad for further confirmation.”
She said that earlier in the month, the hospital had sent some 23 test samples to NIH and the institute confirmed four of them out of which one was a doctor from Saudi Arabia, who was still at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of AKUH. Dr Jamil said that earlier excluding the doctor, the remaining swine flu patients were from Karachi and had not travelled recently, which in many cases was considered the main cause of contracting swine flu.
Recently, AKUH sent some new samples of suspected swine flu patients and thought they have been confirmed positive by the AKUH they were still sent for re-confirmation to the NIH.
The government is, however, not taking into account the increasing number of swine flu patients in Karachi and when asked, repeatedly refers to the 4 cases confirmed by the NIH. Focal Person of Swine Flu Surveillance Cell, Dr Shakil Mullick said that “for us a confirmation by the NIH is more important as a confirmation from is counted as national figures. It is not that we are not doing anything; preparation.
