High-Speed Broadband Network to be Build by Google

from TopNews - A fierce competition was set off among 600communities when last monthGoogle announced that it would build a high-speed broadband network. Though, it has not been specific about the criteria in choosing the community which will get experimental fiber optic hook up, the company stated that the connection speeds of 1 gigabit per second will be offered by the service which will be 100 times faster as compared to many high-speed home connections.

The company revealed that it had received more than 190,000 responses from individuals and that the communities have reacted to the project in force.

Google said, “We've seen cities rename themselves, great YouTube videos, public rallies and hundreds of grass-roots Facebook groups come to life, all with the goal of bringing ultra-high-speed broadband to their communities”.

Some people behaved in an eccentric manner in order to draw Google’s attention, for instance, the mayor of Duluth, Minn., jumped into the icy waters of Lake Superior, and the mayor of Topeka, Kan., renamed his city "Google" for the month of March. In another instance, Rancho Cucamonga got a Web makeover as Rancho Googlemonga.

Google shared that it plans to reach about 500,000 people with its Google Fiber for Communities experiment, but they will not be able to build in every interested community.

Before choosing the winner, Google plans to conduct on-site visits and meet with local officials.
