from The News - PESHAWAR: While conditionally supporting renaming of the NWFP as Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the Chitral Journalists Forum (CJF) and Chitral Care Foundation (CCF) asked the government to declare district status for Mastuj sub-division and rename Kabul River as Chitral River.
The demands were made at a meeting presided over by the CJF President Zulfiqar Ali Shah and attended by members of both the organisations.CCF Chairman Sartaj Ahmad, along with members of the CJF Sabir Aman, Muhammad Sharif Shakeeb, Nadir Khwaja, Aziz Ahmad Chitrali, Abdul Wadud Baig, Ali Murad and Ghulam Mustafa attended the meeting.
The participants of the meeting sought special share for Chitral in the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, as the area was less developed compared to other districts of the province.
The participants noted that area-wise Chitral was the biggest district of the province but was far behind as far as the provision of basic necessities of life was concerned. They said the area of Chitral was 14,850 square kilometres forming 20 per cent of the province and it was difficult to run the administration of the district as a single unit.
The participants said people from far-flung areas such as Yarkhun, Boroghul, Laspur, Terich and Mor Koh had to cover long distance to reach the district headquarters for availing educational and health facilities. They noted that ailing persons had been died on the way to hospitals owing to ling distance. They said the district status to Mastuj sub-division would go long way toward mitigating the sufferings of the people.
