CHITRAL: The disappointed residents of Chitral district on Sunday sought the help of foreign countries to complete the Lowari Tunnel project on which work has been stopped owing to non-availability of funds.
Talking to reporters at the Chitral Press Club, a group of elders led by former MNA Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali appealed to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, China and Japan to provide $150million each
for the completion of the project. As the so-called people s government has failed to provide funds we have no other option but to seek help of the friendly countries, he said.
Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali said that the half a million population of Chitral could have got easy access to rest of the country had the project been completed as per schedule.
Unfortunately the miseries of Chitralis are increasing with each passing day as the government of Pakistan and National Highway Authority have left the vital project incomplete, he said.
The former MNA said that despite repeated requests by the people the authorities showed the least interest in the project and the South Korean Sambu construction company also shifted its machinery from the site on July 9.
Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali said that the project was scheduled to be completed by 2013 and Rs8 billion had already been spent on it. However, he argued that the project was put in doldrums due to the apathy of the PPP-led government.
The elders from Chitral appealed to the envoys of China, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Japan to ask their governments to help complete the project.
