Work stoppage on Lowari Tunnel: road blockade threatened

CHITRAL: Leaders of various political parities staged a protest against the stoppage of work on the Lowari Tunnel project.

The protest was staged the other day under the banner of the Anjuman-e-Tahafuz-e-Haqooq-e-Chitral. Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali, a former Jamaat-e-Islami MNA who is the president of the body, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf district president Abdul Latif, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid district president former MPA Syed Ahmad, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz district president Fazle Rahim advocate, former tehsil nazim Sartaj Ahmad Khan, Maulana Israruddin of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Mohiuddin of the Awami National Party and others addressed the protesters.

They threatened to block the Dir-Chitral Road and stage sit-in at the site of the Lowari Tunnel if work was not resumed on the project. The speakers asked the local lawmakers to tender resignation for failing to protect the rights of the Chitralis. Expressing resentment at the stoppage of work on the project, they criticised the leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party for not materialising the mega project launched by the party founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
