SSP Sonia Shamrooz Khan Nominated for International Award in Recognition of Valuable Policing Services

PESHAWAR – Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sonia Shamrooz from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) has been nominated for a prestigious award by the International Association of Women Police. Her nomination comes in recognition of her outstanding policing skills and invaluable services in the prevention of violence against women. Sonia will make history as the first Asian and second Muslim woman to receive the Police Officer of the Year award in the association’s 60-year history.

Sonia Shamrooz Khan has played a crucial role in reducing violence and suicides among women in Chitral, earning widespread acclaim for her efforts. One of her notable achievements was the establishment of the Women’s Desk, aimed at safeguarding the inheritance rights of Chitrali women. This initiative received global recognition for its positive impact.

In addition to her remarkable contributions in K-P, Sonia Shamrooz has also been awarded a prestigious Chevening Fellowship for her work in human rights and advancing policing practices during her time in the United Kingdom.

Expressing her gratitude, Sonia Shamrooz stated that the nomination was an honor not only for herself but also for the K-P police force. She highlighted the significance of the Women’s Desk, emphasizing its role in addressing women’s rights, providing legal assistance, and addressing domestic disputes. Furthermore, the desk has been instrumental in supporting women affected by poverty, local conflicts, and outdated traditions. It is for these valuable services that she has been nominated for the esteemed award.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hayat Gandapur lauded Sonia’s nomination, emphasizing that her efforts have garnered recognition worldwide. He expressed his pride in the achievements of the K-P Police and highlighted how Sonia’s nomination will enhance the positive image of the police force at an international level.

Chitral, in recent years, has witnessed an alarming increase in suicide rates, particularly among women. To address this concerning issue, a specialized police desk was established, providing a safe space for women to seek assistance without hesitation. Sonia Shamrooz remarked that the domestic challenges faced by women in Lower Chitral, with a population of 278,000, were escalating daily. However, with the support of these dedicated desks, women have become more empowered to speak out against oppression and injustice. As a result, the district witnessed a significant decline in suicide cases from January to June 2021, with only six reported incidents.

Sonia Shamrooz Khan’s nomination for this esteemed award not only recognizes her exceptional contributions but also shines a spotlight on the valuable work being done by the K-P Police. It is a testament to the commitment of the police force in ensuring the safety and well-being of women in the region.
