MULTAN, Dec 8 (APP): Eight persons including two security personnel and five kids were martyred and 47 others sustained injuries, four of them seriously, when terrorists blew up an explosive laden vehicle at Qasim Bela in cantonment area here Tuesday. Two suspected terrorists were also killed in suicide attack in which terrorists fired bullets from Kalashanakov, rocket(s), threw handgrenades and then blew up the explosive laden vehicle. ISPR Multan Incharge Major Farooq confirmed deaths of eight persons including five kids, two security personnel and a civilian employees who is yet to be identified.
Those died included four kids from the family of an injured employee of MES namely Ajmal, sources said. A resident of Qasim Bela said three daughters of injured Ajmal including Hina (3), Tabinda (4), Zainab (5) died. ISPR officer said that Shehzad (10), the son of MES employees Ajmal, also lost his life. Abdullah (5), the son of an Air Force employee Saleem, security personnel Sawar Shakeel Ahmad, Dafedar Faisal and a civilian employee who is yet to be identified also embraced Shahadat. Sources said that body of two and half years old daughter of a Lance Naik Murtaza was also recovered from the debris, however, it could not be officially confirmed.Eye witnesses told police that a white pick up van used in the blast had first stopped at a nearby pipe factory and then started approaching the building of a law enforcement agency. One of the three terrorists came out of the vehicle and started running slowly, while throwing handgrenades, firing rocket and bullets. Security personnel deputed on the check post returned the fire. However, in the meantime, the pick up blew up causing the death of two suicide bombers and two security personnel. Pieces of a Kalashnikov and a rocket launcher were recovered from the blast site. The blast was so powerful that it was heard throughout the city and caused a 12 feet deep and 34 feet wide crater besides smashing windows panes of the nearby houses. Commissioner Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi said that 800 1000 kilogram explosives was used in the blast. Russian made rocket launcher was also used in the attack.Helicopters started flying over the cantonment area while ambulances of Rescue 1122, Eidhi, Nishtar Hospital and CMH ran on the city roads while playing sirens to shift the injured to hospitals after the blast incident.SSP Operations Agha Muhammad Yousuf said that search operation was in progress to arrest the third terrorist who fled the scene. Regional Police Officer Arif Ikram said that three teams have been formed which are busy to locate and arrest the third terrorist reportedly of the age of 20 25 years.Law enforcers were also scouring the area to search the engine and number plate of the vehicle.Around 36 injured were under treatment at CMH and eleven others at Nishtar Hospital.
