CHITRAL: NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti Monday called for unity to eliminate the terrorists.
Addressing a grand jirga in Chitral, he said the district suffered the indirect impact of militancy in the rest of the Malakand region. He said Chitral had been included in the relief package announced by the prime minister for the region’s rebuilding.
The chief minister said the NWFP government had ensured that the under-construction Lowari Tunnel would remain open for two hours daily to lessen the hardship of the Chitrali people while traveling to and from the district.
He said that work on the tunnel would be completed soon and subsequently the region would be linked with the Central Asian states.
The chief minister argued that development funds were allocated keeping in view the population of the districts but Chitral district would be provided extra funds as it was lagging behind in uplift. Hoti announced Rs280 millions for Abdul Wali Khan Bypass Road to be constructed in Chitral. He said a powerhouse in the name of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed would be built in the district.
The chief minister inaugurated the Doctors’ Colony in Sangoor area and a children hospital in Chitral city. He was accompanied by Federal Communication Minister Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan, NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Minister for Population Welfare Muhammad Saleem Khan, Senator Zahid Khan and officials of the National Highway Authority (NHA).
Earlier, the chief minister visited the District Headquarters Hospital, Timergara, and inquired after the health of those injured in Friday’s suicide attack outside the mosque in the Police Lines. He distributed compensation amount among the families of those killed and injured in the blast.
To a query, the chief minister said the NWFP government would honour the promise of enforcing Nizam-e-Adl Regulation and setting up Darul Qaza in Malakand division.Tough security measures were put in place during the chief minister’s visit to Chitral and Dir Lower.
