PESHAWAR: A total of 328 cases of violence against women were recorded during the last six months in NWFP according to a report launched by the Aurat Foundation here Monday.
Sharing the report, Dr Salahuddin, who is a member of Aurat Foundation’s committee on violence against women, said 233 cases were registered in different police stations in NWFP while 37 were unregistered and there was no evidence of FIR in the remaining 58 cases.
The report, prepared by the foundation during the last six months, said that highest number of cases was reported from Peshawar followed by Mardan, Nowshera and Charsadda districts.
Accompanied by Aurat Foundation Resident Director Shabina Ayaz and Project Coordinator Shirin Javed, Dr Salahuddin said 22 women committed suicide due to different reasons including six in Chitral, four each in Charsadda and Haripur, two each in Peshawar, Mardan and Mansehra and one each in Swabi and Karak.
At least 38 cases of kidnapping of women were reported across the province during the period. Twenty-two women were kidnapped in Peshawar, four in Mardan and one each in Charsadda, Swabi, Mansehra, Bannu and Malakand.
Similarly, 64 cases of domestic violence against women were reported. Of these, 37 cases were reported in Peshawar, five in Nowshera, four each in Mardan and Swabi, two cases each in Charsadda, Swat and DI Khan, and one each in Haripur, Kohat, Buner, Dir Upper and Dir Lower.
Five cases of rape and gang rape incidents were reported including two in Peshawar and one each in Nowshera, Haripur and Battagram. The only case of a woman burnt by kerosene oil was reported in Peshawar while a case of acid throwing occurred in Nowshera.
Dr Salahuddin said the relationship between victims and offenders was known as husband, son, brother, father, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, stepson, father-in-law, fiancÈ and sister-in-law were involved in most incidents. He said the intensity of violence against women was alarming and reflective of the horrible picture of the society. The News
