Frontier Post - PESHAWAR: Twenty-two persons were killed on Tuesday in a number of rain, house collapse and avalanches incidents in the Swat, AJK and Skardu. According to a private TV channel eight persons were swept away in a river when a landslide in Skardu hit their vehicle. Meanwhile, the Swat administration declared emergency as heavy snowfall, rain and the resulting freezing weather continued to plague the people of Swat, Shangla and Kohistan. In Theyyal area of Kohistan tehsil a girl died as roof of the house caved in. Three persons were injured in the same incident. Landslide crushed 50 goats to death in Cammala. River Swat swelled as it received huge quantity of water from ravines, streams caused by rains on the hills and high
mountains. Water overflowed from its banks into agricultural land destroying crops. Because of heavy damages to homes and other property, DCO Swat has established a control room to monitor the situation and if possible help the affected. The DCO has asked the people to call on 9240338 for guidance and help. Reports say all the mountain areas in Swat continued to receive heavy snow. Kalam had five feet while Bahrain had one-foot snow. Kalam-Mingora Highway was closed after an avalanche blocked the road near Mankial and Jakh areas. Many other roads situated at the high levels also remained closed because of heavy snow, rains and landslides. In Shangla heavy snow and rain continued unabated. Alpori-Chekaser road, Alpori-Poren road and other link roads have been closed because of landslides or avalanches. In the upper regions of Shangla electricity and communication systems have been disrupted. Karakorum highway was closed because of substantial rise in water level in a ravine at Shang. However, Alpori-Mingora road was opened for traffic. In Haripur at least four persons died as the roof of a house collapsed due to torrential rain on Tuesday. According to police, those died included a couple and their two children. The major roads connecting Chitral to other parts of the country were blocked for all types of vehicular transportation due to heavy snowfall and downpour. Whereas the flights of the state run airline were also suspended for the last three days. Lawari tunnel was closed for traffic as land slides have been reported in different areas of the district besides avalanches have also hit badly the communication system of the area. The NHA staff was trying hard to remove the glaciers from the main road and to open it for traffic. Meanwhile, traffic was also suspended on the main Chitral-Drosh road at Gang village area due to heavy land sliding on Tuesday. Different areas of the district including Ashriat, Ziarat, Lawari top and upper parts of Chitral received more snowfall on Tuesday and the lush green background was further highlighted by the mountains wearing white scarf of thick snow. In Azad Kashmir, three persons reportedly died in the limits of Thorar Tehsil as a hilly drain washed their car away during torrential rains and snowfall that lashed a number of districts in Azad Jammu and Kashmir disrupting the daily life. The search for bodies of three persons Shabbir, Naeem and Attique Khan was underway. The Rawalakot-Muzaffarabad highway is also closed due to land sliding. Reportedly some houses and shops were also washed away in rainwater. In Alpuri tehsil of Shangla district at least four persons of a same family including women and children lost their lives as roof of their house caved in. In yet another incident of house collapse, a woman died in Thall tehsil of Hangu District. In Allai Tehsil of district Battagram, two people were killed when an avalanche hit their van which slipped into a deep ravine. Meanwhile, severe storm after rains in Mach town played havoc. Walls of football stadium and kutcha houses were damaged while Minaret of New Addah Mosque was also collapsed. According to details, strong winds blowing in the town since yesterday (Monday) destroyed walls of Mama Khiar Jan Football stadium, Kutcha houses. Minaret of a mosque also fell down while several trees were uprooted. Stormy winds made the weather very cold and in the absence of electricity and gas people fell ill. Routine life was also paralysed due to several cold weather and town was giving deserted look. Reports of losses caused by strong winds form adjourning areas were also received. In the meanwhile, Gas official have repaired gas pipeline affected in an explosion and supply restored. In Murree, heavy snowfall covered the mountains of queen of hills (Murree) during the ongoing rain spell in the area and it is first snofall in the current winter season. According to the people of the area, intermittent rains and snowfall jammed the roads packed with the tourists who had been waiting for the snow to fall since long. The supply of electricity remained suspended in various parts of the Murree and the roads could not be cleared till late night Tuesday. Due to the blockade roads, tourists are facing difficulty in walking on Mall and other areas which were covered with snow. Meanwhile, a large number of tourists from the twin cities Rawalpindi/Islamabad arrived Murree to enjoy snowfalling.
