ISLAMABAD, Feb 28 (APP): A moderate earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude on the richter scale jolted parts of northern Pakistan, including Federal Capital on early Sunday morning, met office said.Tremors were felt in, Swat, Lower Dir, Bunir, Hangu, Malakand, Shangla, Nowshera, Mansehra, Balakot, Attock, Peshawar and Momhand Agency.
“The epicentre of the quake was some 140 kilometres west of Chitral district in the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan,” Chief Meteorologist National Seismic Monitoring Centre Muhammad Riaz told APP.
According to US Geological Survey the quake was of 5.7 magnitude and 175 kilometres north-east of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul.

Riaz said the fault line was in an unpopulated area therefore no loss of life and property was reported from any of the rattled areas. “The remote location of the quake saved both the countries from any major damage”.
“The tremor was 68 kilometre in depth and a quake of such a magnitude in this area never causes huge losses,” he said. He said Hindu Kush was prone to quakes and every year at least two shocks occur in the region. “But these do not cause losses,” he said. He said that an aftershock of 5-6 magnitude in the same region could occur within a couple of days.
