from Business Recorder - ISLAMABAD (March 24 2010): Dr Shama Khalid on Tuesday took oath as the first female Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, replacing the acting Governor and Federal Minister for Information Qamar Zaman Kaira. Chief Judge Gilgit-Baltistan took oath from Dr Shama, who became the first woman governor in the country's history.
The special ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah, members Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly and other dignitaries. Dr Shama Khalid belongs to Astor District of Gilgit-Baltistan, who has good track record of carrying out social works in different parts of Gilgit-Baltistan by establishing free summer medical camps every year.
The federal government for the first time created the slot of governor and Chief Minister in the new of Gilgit-Baltistan, under a reform package announced in August last year. Meanwhile, sources informed that Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani would also announce the formation of Gilgit-Baltistan cabinet till Thursday. It was learnt that out of the six cabinet members, four would be from Pakistan People's Party, one independent candidate and one from JUI.
The elections for Gilgit-Baltistan Council also held recently, where four members were elected from PPP, one each from JUI and an independent. The other six members of the Council would be Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Interior Minister, Finance Minister and Minister for Information. The selection of the remaining two members is the prerogative of the Prime Minister, who is the Chairman of 15-member Council. Governor and Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan are also members of the Council.
