Chitral side of road to Tajikistan charted

Via - Daily Dawn - PESHAWAR, April 7: Survey for building a road from Chitral to Tajikistan has been completed up to the Afghan border and has identified Lotkoh valley of Chitral as the most feasible and safe route. NWFP Minister for Population Welfare Saleem Khan disclosed this while speaking at a public meeting at Garam Chashma on Wednesday.

An official handout quoted the minister as saying that the people of the district had long been demanding the road and promised work on it would start during the tenure of the present government.

He said the road would help boost local economy, thus improving the standard of life of the people.

Praising the role of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in developing Chitral, the minister said that it was Mr Bhutto who pulled the district of Chitral out its backward neglected state and brought it into the mainstream by starting mega uplift projects there.

“Lawari Tunnel is one of those mega projects undertaken by Shaheed Bhutto which, on its completion now, has not only connected the district with other parts of the country but has also put an end to the economic monopoly and exploitation of a handful of hoarders and profiteers in the district once and for all,” he commented.

The present government of the PPP, he maintained, was also giving special attention to development of Chitral and had included the district in category ‘A’ of the Malakand package.

He said that on his special request, the government had waived all agricultural loans, micro loans and electricity bills of Chitral, which had directly benefited the poor.

The minister also announced construction of the Garam Chashma road, establishment of a higher secondary school and other development schemes in the area.

Other speakers included district PPP president Zainul Abdin.

On this occasion, hundreds of workers of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q announced joining the PPP.
