The News - ISLAMABAD: Former President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf is planning to sue the members of the UN probe commission for holding him responsible for the murder, The News learnt here on Saturday.
“In the report, Musharraf has not been accused personally but it has been mentioned that his government failed to protect Benazir Bhutto,” said Chaudhry Fawad, a lawyer of the ex-president, while talking to The News.
In a press conference, a UN commission member mentioned the name of the ex-president (Musharraf) while responding to a question. He said they would seek explanation from the UN commission whether its member intentionally named Musharraf or he did utter his name unintentionally. “If the UN commission member unintentionally mentioned the name of the former president, no action would be taken but if he did so intentionally the former president would move the International Court of Justice against the UN commission,” he added. Fawad said Musharraf had received the complete report and studied it completely. He said Musharraf was consulting his lawyers in Pakistan as well as abroad in this regard.
Usman Manzoor adds: Musharraf’s party has passed on the buck to the present regime regarding the findings of the UN Commission on Benazir’s murder, saying the report is a serious indictment on the government while there are just passing remarks about Musharraf. Musharraf’s mouthpiece says the media is only highlighting Musharraf’s part of the report for unknown reasons while the main charges are against the government.
Though the report of the UN Commission has given yet another reason to Musharraf not to return to the country his ‘self-proclaimed’ spokesman Barrister Saif is hopeful that Musharraf will return to Pakistan when conditions would be ‘suitable’ for him. So far, there are three FIRs lodged against Musharraf, the most serious among them being the one registered in Quetta on the orders of the Balochistan High Court on the charge of murdering Nawab Akbar Bugti.
Barrister Saif, while talking to The News, said he daily talked to the ousted dictator being his friend and when was asked about the reaction of Musharraf over the UN report he said, ‘Musharraf has no reaction’.
“There is nothing against Musharraf in the UN report as the remarks about him are just passing remarks,” said Musharraf’s spokesman adding: “The report is a serious indictment against the present regime but the media is unnecessarily highlighting Musharraf’s part of the report for unknown reason”.
He said Musharraf was busy in his lectures and would return to Pakistan to take over the command of his party when conditions would be suitable for him. However he refused to give any timeframe. Moreover, former secretary National Security Council Tariq Aziz made a rare TV statement and said his former boss will not return to Pakistan.
Musharraf is also trying to get his political party, All Pakistan Muslim League, registered with the Election Commission. His party is still in an embryonic stage and has met politicians in Dubai. Those who met him included Hamayun Akhtar, Lal Nisar, Hamid Nasir Chattha, Khurshid Kasuri, Sher Afghan Niazi and Nisar Memon. Brigadier (retd) Rashid Qureshi was also present in the ‘political’ meetings of Musharraf in Dubai. Sources in the PML-Likeminded say that all are in two minds whether to join Musharraf or not as a few see ‘bright’ future in not joining the ex-dictator.
