London (The Asians UK - Special Correspondent) - Nawaz Sharif must refrain from issuing baseless statements or be ready to face the truth, this was warned by the former Pakistani president General (retired) Pervez Musharraf while talking to media persons here the other day.
He said Nawaz Sharif had bee in his bonnet as he could not work with any COAS and President during both of his terms as premier. “So much so he orchestrated attack on the Supreme Court”.
He asked Nawaz Sharif to tell what development works he had carried out in his tenure. Even he was against nuclear tests and was forced by others to do so, he added.
Pervez Musarraf said he replaced politics of hatred with understanding and allowed Benazir Bhutto to return to country. He said he was ready for cooperation in bringing about political harmony in Pakistan.
Replying to a question he said there was no case pending against him in any court, though cases had been framed against him on political ground to intimidate him. “But such tactics can’t frighten me.”
He reiterated that he would return the country before the next general elections and that too with full preparations. Replying to a question, Gen Musharraf said he had not received any questionnaire from government’s committee in connection with
Benazir Assassination Case. “I only learnt about it through the media.”
He said he saw no point of holding another inquiry after a detailed UN report in the matter. “Security of an individual is not the responsibility of the president and the president has the constitutional cover for his actions”, he explained.
Gen Musharraf said he was in contact with political fraternity and people of Pakistan at grassroots level.
Replying to another question he said he was totally against hereditary politics. He said there was no governance in Pakistan except politics. The turmoil faced by the country is the result of failure of the governance. Hatred based politics is being carried out in the country. The only way to come out of this situation and bring change in the political culture is that the 60 percent literate people including youth, women and minorities should wholeheartedly participate in the elections process.
He said contrary to other political parties, appointments in his party would be made through democratic process and not by an individual.
He said there is no leadership in Pakistan that could unite all political parties at one platform. United Muslim League was his idea and the doors of his party are open to everyone. ’APML is not a small party and he would not beg any other party for joining’.
To a question he said he was fully satisfied with the security arrangements made for him by the British government. 'If a democratic government goes against national security interest the Army has to take over'.
He said a political leadership that could bind itself with the public opinion and determination could improve the situation in the country.
When asked about his inaction against corruption he said $10million were recovered from Admiral Masoorul Haq while money involved in other scams were recovered and returned to the people. ‘Rs 322b were recovered through NAB’. However, he admitted that action against corruption was not taken to the extent during his tenure as it supposed to be.
Earlier, he briefed about his US visit and said like Britain, chapter offices have been opened in that country also. In UK offices have been opened in 11 regions with headquarters in London. Party offices in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi would be opened very soon, he added. Party Chief Co-ordinator UK Hamid Mirza, Political Coordinator Asif Shahzad, Secretary General Ifzaal Siddiqui, Information Secretary Dr Zia ur Rehman, Additional Information Secretary Muhammad Ali and others were also present on the occasion.
