PESHAWAR (Frontier Post): Though city transporters announced ten percent increase in the fares of the public transport on Sunday after the hike in prices of petroleum products, they have actually raised the fares by more than 22 percent as they are charging Rs 11 per passenger from Karkhano stop to Saddar stop after the rise in prices of petroleum products, where as they were charging nine rupees before the price hike. President of the transporters' association Haji Ihsan Ullah told media that the transporters tried their best to hold talks with the government regarding increase in the fares; however, the ANP-led government did not give any response. "After a cold response from the government, we have decided to raise the fare of inner-city and inter-district transport by almost eight percent," Haji Ihsan said. The decision of raising the fares was taken in a meeting of the transporters here on Sunday. The meeting strongly criticized the hike in PoL prices which would not only affect the transporters but also the general public. Haji Ihsan said after the raise in PoL products the raise in the transport fares had become unavoidable. Meanwhile, some scuffles were also witnessed when the passengers demanded a government approved fare list from the drivers and conductors. However, there was no fare list with the transporters. On the other hand while talking to The Frontier Post a number of bus drivers and conductors, who mostly own the public transport vehicles, they drive, said they could not transport the passengers on the old fares after the prices of petrol and diesel were raised by the government. They were of the view that it would bring extra financial burden on the transporters.
