Looming closure of community-based schools protested

CHITRAL: Scores of female teachers serving at the community-based schools in Chitral district staged a protest outside the Press Club and asked the authorities not to wind up the project.

Holding banners and placards, representatives of the teachers including Sajida, Shazia Anwar, Nasreen, Pardoom Jamal, Bibi Safra
and others chanted slogans in favour of their demands. Later, speaking at a press conference, they said around 95 schools had been functioning in Chitral since 1999 to impart education to children belonging to the poor families.

The teachers said the project was being devolved under the 18th Amendment to the province, which, according to them, was winding it up. “The closing down of these institutions will not only deprive many deserving students of education but also render the teachers jobless,” one of the speakers said.

They said the teachers had not received salaries since October last but they were still performing duties. They asked the chief minister to intervene save the teachers from being sacked.
