JI activists block GT Road to protest Lowari Tunnel closure

PESHAWAR: The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Sunday staged protest against the federal government for closing the Lowari Tunnel for traffic and asked the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court to take suo moto notice of the issue.

Led by JI’s provincial President Mohammad Ibraheem Khan, former Member National Assembly from Chitral Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali and JI provincial vice-president Sahibzada Haroon-ur-Rasheed, the protesters blocked the main GT Road for sometime.

They were holding placards and banners inscribed with anti-government slogans. The speakers said the federal government had decided to close the tunnel for traffic for four days a week and open it for only three hours on the remaining three days and termed it an injustice to Chitralis. They said that in the winter when the Lowari Pass is covered with snow the only option for the people was to use the tunnel for transportation.

They said this decision would severely affect the people of Chitral and called upon the government to withdraw it and keep it open for at least four hours daily.
