A silent supporter of Pervez Musharraf in KP Assembly

PESHAWAR: Ghulam Mohammad is the only lawmaker and parliamentary leader of his party in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly but he seldom speaks on the assembly floor in favour of his leader former president General (R) Pervez Musharraf for certain reasons.

The All Pakistan Muslim League has unconditionally supported Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The APML MPA claimed he had taken this decision with the consensus of his leader, who is presently under house arrest in Islamabad.

General (R) Musharraf had boycotted the May 11 general election after his nomination papers were rejected and he was disqualified by the courts for contesting the polls. However, candidates of the APML in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s mountainous Chitral district turned down the party decision and contested the polls.

Shahzada Iftikharuddin was elected to the National Assembly and Ghulam Mohammad to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on the APML ticket from Chitral.

Ghulam Mohammad said Musharraf would have got 90 percent votes in the election had he been allowed to contest the polls in Chitral as he was the most popular leader amongst the Chitralis.

“As president of Pakistan, Gen Musharraf visited Chitral eight times and due to his personal interest the long-awaited Lowari Tunnel was partially completed,” he said, adding that the tunnel would have been inaugurated had Musharraf remained in power for one more year.

He said that mega projects like Booni-Shandur Road, Hydel Power House Golen Gol and Athak Canal were initiated by General Musharraf in Chitral.

Ghulam Mohammad told The News that after winning the election he along with MNA Shahzada Iftikharuddin met Musharraf at his farmhouse in Chak Shahzad, Islamabad, who formally allowed him to sit on the treasury benches in the provincial assembly.

“Musharraf was in good mood and vowed to face all the cases filed against him,” the APML MPA said, adding that Musharraf also thanked the people of Chitral for supporting and voting for his party candidates in the elections. The MPA said that his leader would get justice from the court of law.

Ghulam Mohammad entered active politics in 1985 and made it to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in the 2008 election on the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid ticket.
