PESHAWAR: Chairman Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan Saturday asked the Federal Government to get the drone strikes by the United States stopped, which were attack on the country's sovereignty.
Peace in the region could not be attained till the drone strikes were stopped, he said addressing a public meeting here at Ring Road, which was called to stop Nato supplies via Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Afghanistan as a protest against drone attacks.
The public meeting was also addressed by PTI leader Shah Mehmud Qureshi, President of Awami Muslim League Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Jamaat Islami leader Liaquat Baluch and Azam Swati of PTI.
Imran Khan said the main factor behind the present unrest in Pakistan and Afghanistan was drone strikes, which must be stopped forthwith. "It is our country and we have to take decisions keeping in view the national interests," he added.
He said it was promised during election campaign that peace would be brought to the country, which was not possible without stopping drone attacks.
Imran said for the first time in the country's history, the democratic government along with all other parties had agreed on initiating dialogue process with Taliban to end violence, which was sabotaged by the recent drone strike, which killed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Hakimullah Mehsud.
He said his party had made two pre-election commitments: eradication of corruption and restoration of peace. He said the PTI preferred to weaken its coalition government rather than compromising on corruption. "We cannot go to the UN Security Council or shoot down drones, but our provincial government can at least block NATO supplies," he said.
He called upon the people of Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan to unite. "Our protest will continue until the US ends missile attacks," he announced.
