Pakistan Develops Life-Saving Hemostat Dressing, KytoStat

Pakistan has successfully patented and developed its first-ever lifesaving hemostat dressing, KytoStat, capable of stopping bleeding within seconds and potentially saving tens of thousands of lives annually. This groundbreaking innovation was led by Dr. Muhammad Yar and his team at the Interdisciplinary Research Center in Biomedical Materials (IRCBM), COMSATS University Islamabad Lahore Campus.

The dressing utilizes a low-cost biopolymer called chitosan, derived from sea creatures, to rapidly stop bleeding. KytoStat works by interacting with negatively charged blood components, leading to immediate platelet thrombosis at the bleeding site ¹. This technology places Pakistan among the top few countries globally to develop such a solution.

According to experts, abnormal bleeding from road accidents and incidents is a leading cause of fatalities worldwide, resulting in approximately five million deaths annually. KytoStat addresses this pressing issue with its cost-effective and life-saving solution, readily available nationwide in various sizes for both clinical and over-the-counter use.

Professionals praise KytoStat's potential, highlighting its benefits in dental procedures, law enforcement, and emergency services. Dr. Aqif Anwar Chaudhry notes that imported patches are unaffordable for the masses, making KytoStat a vital solution for Pakistan ¹. With its export potential, this innovation is poised to make a significant impact globally.
