Awami National Party (ANP) leader Aimal Wali Khan raised alarming concerns about food safety during a recent meeting. He revealed that the milk sold in the country far surpasses its actual production, with only 22% being genuine milk. The remaining 78%, he claimed, consists of harmful white chemicals marketed as milk, posing serious health risks.
Senator Dinesh Kumar echoed these concerns, pointing out the lack of an effective system to test the quality of rice sold in the country. He stressed the urgency of addressing food safety issues and called for immediate and stringent measures.
In response, the standing committee has established a sub-committee tasked with drafting policies to enhance food safety standards and ensure the quality of consumables.
Food security officials further disclosed that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered 17 cases related to irregularities in rice exports. Among the suspects, 11 have been arrested, 2 remain at large, and 4 are out on bail. The committee emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges to safeguard public health and restore confidence in the food supply chain.
