Natives of Chitral settled in Karachi on Saturday held a walk at the Quaid-e-Azam mausoleum to draw attention of the authorities concerned towards environmental degradation, especially melting of glaciers in the hilly areas of the country.
The focus of the walk, organised by the Chitral Heritage and Environment Preservation Society (CHEPS), was to create awareness among the citizens about melting of glaciers in Chitral owing to global warming and environmental degradation in the country.
The CHEPS is working for creating awareness among the masses about adverse affects of the environmental degradation. Poor law and order situation in the country was also on the agenda of the organisers. The participants of the walk were carrying banners inscribed with demands for taking steps to cut carbon emissions, elimination of factors leading to environmental pollution and restoration of peace in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, CHEPS office-bearers and volunteers said that glaciers in Chitral were melting at an alarming pace and recently some of the glaciers even burst, wiping out several villages and properties worth millions of rupees. They said that it was an alarming situation as melting of glaciers would create climatic catastrophe, initially in the form of floods and then drought as Pakistani rivers are dependent on glaciers for water.
According to them, during the last few years, the mountainous region of Chitral had lost four of its gigantic glaciers that resulted in the loss of human lives, households, livestock, crops and forests.
They appealed to the government to pay attention towards the issue and take steps for environmental conservation.
