Controlling inflation, unemployment, improving law and order govt’s priorities: Kaira

ISLAMABAD (APP)April 27 (APP) - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said Tuesday that after coming to power top priorities of the incumbent government were to address the price hike, unemployment, improving law and order and resolve the issues of the federation and judicious distribution of resources. Participating in a Radio Pakistan Programme “Naye Uffaq” broadcast from Islamabad, the minister said, “Now we have overcome the problem of wheat and sugar shortage and this year we will have bumper wheat crop and are in a position to export it.”
He said the inflation rate which was at that time over 25 per cent has been reduced to 10.5 per cent and problems of the federation are being addressed.

Kaira said with a national consensus of all the stakeholders Energy Conservation Conference process is being implemented.

He said all the people of Pakistan want stability in the country and the government is taking those steps which have popular say of the masses.

Answering a question, the minister said the parliament has the mandate and power to amend the Constitution, adding no other institution has the right to amend the Constitution except the parliament.

The minister said they had contested the elections under the Charter of Democracy which proposed reforms in judiciary, executives and other areas.

He said Carter of Democracy is the basic document of the two parties which was signed by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif.

Kaira said although the 18th amendment is not ideal, it is the unanimous effort of the parliament and every political party has gained something through this amendment. He said let the system move forward and it will improve with the passage of time.

He said an improved Judicial Commission has been established under the 18th amendment in the present circumstances.

Answering a question the Information Minister said that the production and industrial sectors of the government departments have their own routine of work. All the government functionaries are not observing two days weekly holidays, he added.

To a listener Kaira said that the Fact Finding Committee is working to know the situation as to who ordered for hosing of the evidences leading to the Shahadat of Benazir Bhutto. He said its report would go to the Criminal Investigation Agency which will make a final report. He made it clear that whosoever may be the assassins of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto would never escape punishment. He said after having the report the reservations of the people would be dispelled and the culprits would have to face the punishment.

To a question, the Minister expressed the hope that the report of the Pay and Pension is coming within next few days and the salaries and pension would be reasonably increased.

About a demand from Chitral to increase the capacity of the PTCL exchange and to energize a private telephone company, the Minister promised to recommend this to the concerned quarters.

Kaira while responding to a question said that there are over ten million jobless youth in the country and efforts are underway to absorb most of them in the government and private sectors.

Answering a question, he said Benazir Cards will be issued to Special Persons for their financial assistance and medical treatment. He said Pakistan Baitul Mall is also providing financial assistance to the special persons.

Answering a caller, the Minister said irrigation water is being distributed under a formula agreed by the four provinces.

When asked that whether the government is going to increase electricity tariff further, the minister said Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance Abdul Hafeez Sheikh after holding talks with IMF and World Bank has given a statement that there will be no immediate increase in the electricity rates.
