GILGIT (The News) : Habib Bank Limited [HBL] Wednesday donated Rs10 million to the people of Hunza affected by the massive landslide early this year.
Jehan Zaib Mir, Area Chief Manager HBL, Gilgit-Baltistan, presented the cheque to Governor Dr Shamma Khalid in a simple ceremony, conveying his management’s wishes for the GB government and the disaster-hit people who got displaced following record upsurge of water in the lake that has submerged at least three upstream villages after it expanded to 23kms. The government has set a deadline between 26 to 30 May, saying that the water could overflow the dam during those dates through a spillway created by army engineers. Officials fear that the gushing water could submerge dozens of downstream villages if it burst the barrier.
Dr Shama expressed her gratitude to the HBL management and hoped that their other organisations will also follow the footstep of HBL in providing relief to the affectees of Attabad disaster. The GB government has evacuated most of the downstream villages and shifted thousands of people in highland camps set up at various places.
